Google Maps but With Graffiti

We need to bring this to Chicago.
A new car is going around San Francisco with a camera attached to the roof mapping the city. But this time the cameras belong to earthmine and they want you to tag the city with your favorite graffiti.

The service is called Wild Style City, according to our friends at Wired, and it allows you to navigate San Francisco, and other cities soon, in a Flash viewer and tag whatever you want with spray paint, markers or paint rollers.

Users can navigate their way around a virtual San Francisco with everything they need to leave their mark on the city. The company actually worked with real graffiti artists to make the service more realistic.

If vintage vinyl is your thing, there's one day a year set aside just for you.
The second annual Record Store Day is just over a week away.
It's the one day that independent record stores come together to celebrate music of the analog vein. Special hard-to-find vinyl releases are scheduled to coincide with the event.
The festivities include performances, meet-and-greets with artists, and DJs.
Your favorite indie store is probably already participating. Check out the list of stores that will take part in Illinois here.
Record Store Day is April 18 in Chicago and other cities across the country.

Fade to Black - Earth Day Celebration

Saturday March 28th, Between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. turn off all of your lights and electrical appliances.
So why not make it a party? Several area businesses have special events and menus planned for Saturday.

* The Affinia Chicago will turn off the lights in the 29th floor rooftop lounge, C-View. Guests can enjoy the stellar views of Chicago amidst the glow of candlelight from 8:30 p.m. to close midnight. C-View will also offer a menu of specialty Earth Hour-themed cocktails ($10 each) for the entire evening such as the Lights Out, In the Dark and Big Al.

* Markethouse (611 N. Fairbanks) is inviting guests in to celebrate with a special "Green Hour Menu" on Saturday that is prepared with no electricity or heat to coincide with the goals of Earth Hour. Items include Seared Tuna with Balsamic Glazed Treviso Salad and Chilled Poached Shrimp. Martinis will be made with Rain Organic Vodka. Ten percent of sales will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund. Entertainment will be provided by an acoustic guitarist and vocalist.

* Whiskey Sky and Living Room is celebrating with their very own Earth Hour Cocktail. The Veev-a-La Green will be offered the entire day, and 50 cents from every cocktail sold will go to Global Green USA. The specialty drink will also be offered on Earth Day (April 22) through the month of May.

* RENEW -- an Earth Day celebration will be held at Le Passage. It's a private reception featuring earth-friendly VEEV cocktails. The lights will be turned off from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Send an email to RSVP@lepassage.com with Earth Hour in the subject line. The overhead lights in the dining area and all other non-essential lighting will be turned off from 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. and candles will be made available for customers.

iDaft...talk like a robot Daft Punk Style

Not the best of Daft's work, but it reminds me of Daft's first website launched in 1996 that was interactive. I am personally a fan of their earlier work. iDaft gets you closer to that talking like a robot using only your keyboard with a virtual sample pad of phrases from "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger."

The Gathering - San Francisco has so many dope DJ sets from The early to late 90s, when Rave was King. There are many MP3s to download, just expand each folder and "save-as".

These MP3 files are created from WAV files, which in turn were generated from the DATs recorded from the mixing desk at each party.

We started recording with audio tapes from 1992 to 1996, and with DAT from 1996 onwards. We intend to create MP3 files from the content of the audio tapes and post them here over the next few months.

Downloading all of these MP3 files will take you a long time. If you want most or all of the sets, save yourself the downloading effort: Send e-mail to pfk001@gmail.com, let me know what sets you want, and I'll burn WAV or MP3 to DVD for you.

10 great beat-making videos

1) Here is Masaaki (aka Anchorsong) from Tokyo, playing live with an MPC2000 and a Triton keyboard, building the tracks as he goes along. More great clips here and here.

2) Here is Daltron from Melbourne, playing an incredible live drum solo on the MPC4000 (it's a MySpace video. I'd say it's worth typing in your password, but not worth registering specially...)

3) Here is Pete Rock sampling, remixing and singing along with 'Love is a Battlefield'

4) In this report on an Atlanta beat battle, there's no live MPC action, but it provides several answers to the age-old question: 'What the hell kind of face am I supposed to pull when my music is playing on big speakers, people are listening, and I don't have any gear to fiddle with?'

5) Here is the old-school version - making beats on an Emu SP-1200. Love the sliders.

6) Here is DJ Shadow talking about his ancient MPC60, the machine he made 'Endtroducing' on. The clip has cruddy sound and Shadow always comes across as pretty irritating, but it's history.

7) Here, speaking the international language of Akai, is French producer 20Syl, with a step-by-step guide to making laid-back MPC/Rhodes/Loops hip hop for expensive Parisian bars.

8) Here is Just Blaze putting together a big horn sample and some beats. It's nice to see that even big name producers spend most of their time stroking their chin thinking: 'Hmm... This sounds OK, but what am I going to do next?'

9) Here, DJ Quik talks eloquently and at great length about his custom MPC3000.

10) If you've actually read all the way to the bottom of this list, then here is a treat to say thanks.

I recently read about the Open Source DJ Mixer : Aurora
Aurora is a usb powered multichannel mixer in a typical dj form factor. the device features two linear channel faders, a single a/b crossfader and eight backlit buttons. twenty four backlit knobs allow you to control effects. aurora, unlike most midi controllers, enhances performances with controllable ambient lighting. aurora easily integrates with your favorite midi compatible software.
